
Windows 10 thumbnail cache
This page contains a full instruction of workarounds for Windows 10 (Home) Explorer in 6 easy steps.
In march of 2022 Windows 10 explorer still has many issues, of wich I am experiencing.
For example: thumbnails will load very slow, especially on network-drives. This ’tweak’ will make sure that the Windows machine is NOT DELETING it’s thumbnail-cache for explorer.exe. You can set this for each device (Tested on latest Windows 10 Home x64).
Turn thumbnail cache permanently ON
For this to work, you need to change two values in the registry of your Windows machine(s);
- [WINDOWS KEY + R] And type in
regedit

Windows will ask for administrator priviléges


- Navigate to:
(or copy/Paste line to regedit-address-bar)
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache
- Set value of “Autostart” to ‘0’ (default: 3)

- Navigate to folder
(or copy/Paste line to regedit-address-bar)
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache

- Set value of “Autostart” to ‘0’ (default: 3)

- Reboot your machine to activate settings. Done, enjoy!
